Greetings to all involved in the Governor's Conference! We are ACES Alternative High School, a secondary school for 'at risk' youth in Mukilteo, Washington. We have been members of the I*EARN Global Family since 1990 and have participated and developed many on-line learning projects. Currently we are developing our third On-line Field Trip where we are following the trek of world class explorers Helen and Bill Thayer, 58 and 67 respectively, as they travel across the great deserts of the world. Called the Sahara to Antarctica Project, we will virtually explore our world with the Thayers as they trek approximately 6,000 miles in a two year period. We invite you all to journey with us and follow our progress on I*EARN and the WWW at the following address: http://www.mukilteo.wednet.edu The following responses were written by ACES students: Q. What is the potential role if the Internet in education? By Jeff Hyde For me the potential role would be the fact that new doors of information are now available at the tips of my fingers. It was previously much more difficult and time consuming to access information whereas now any information one might need for a report may be found in one class room. It is like having the world's greatest library available to each studnent through their computer terminal. What has working with technologies prepared you for your future education and career? Learning how to use the computer as an educational tool has given me the opportunity to pursue a better paying job than I would have been able to pursue otherwise. Based on the advancements in technology, if I did not have had the chance to work on the computer and learn how to use it, then I would be left behind. I would be unable to work in future industries because of a lack of educational skills. My knowledge of how to use the computer to access information or to create documents and reports with that information enables me to be prepared for the future in any field of work I may choose.
