To: Governers Conference From: coldspring@igc.apc.org Dear Governors, My name is Sean Harrington, and I am an eighteen year old senior at Cold Spring Harbor High School on Long Island. I am currently enrolled in a Public Affairs Seminar class. in which I use the internet as part of my work on an internet based news magazine, The Contemporary, to contact students all over the world to get their views on some important global and national issues. The topics include anything from, National Identity, Bosnian War Crimes, the Hamas bombings, the Olympics, Feminism, Gay Parenting, to what the current status of those kids government and living conditions are in their country. I have learned many things through my work as especially regarding how teens abroad see themselves, as well as us in this world. I have learned about what effects our subsidized goods are having on the Australian farmer, from a teacher there at Mansfield Secondary College. I have learned about the changing times in Russia, from two freshmen who live there. I also learned about the huge difference in the way women in Russia see themselves, from the way that women in America see themselves. I have sent my condolences to the people in Scotland who lost children in that terrible bombing. Without the internet, and e-mail, this kind of work would not be possible. With this technology, I am able to write a letter, and if the person wants to respond, have a response later that day. I believe my project work represents only the tip of the iceberg regarding the possibilities for internet learning. Sean Harrington
