"The Olympics in My Community"

William Carr

The Olympic Games epitomise all the wild emotions athletes feel when they strive for that glorious golden moment. Agony or ecstasy, which will it be? A lifetime's work all crammed into a few dramatic moments where the pure joy of winning is oh so often r eplaced with that heartbreaking moment of failure.

Listen to the crowd. They gasp in amazement as the drama unfolds and the athlete crashes to the ground. Not a sound can be heard. Then the atmosphere electrifies as the favourite approaches the line. He's there! The crowd roars in excitement and share in his one moment of glory.

That's what the Olympic spirit means to me!

Once a year our school holds a sports day split into groups by age. The competition is healthy, and the will to win tremendous. However, the spirit of the Olympics and its traditions are followed; Fair play, companionship and the coming together of all three divisions to act in harmony for the common purpose of enjoyment. There are no medals but the winners do receive certificates of achievement which are cherished and may be in later years used to encourage the youth of tomorrow.

England continued. . .
