iEARN III CIVICS Project Workshop in Lebanon
In January 2002, iEARN-Lebanon (International Education Association) in Beirut conducted a training workshop for teachers in Lebanon through the CIVICS III project sponsored by the United States State Department. This is part of a larger project involving six countries--Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to use telecommunications technology to engage students in civics projects in English. An earlier workshop was held in March 2000.
iEARN -Lebanon gathered 24 teachers from various schools in Lebanon to join its CIVICS program in a day's workshop at the Planet Discovery, Children Science Museum. The day started with an overview of the program in Lebanon and how it was initiated with the assistance of the U.S. Department of State and the American Embassy in Beirut. Ms. Deborah Smith from the Political Affairs Office and Ms. Edith Horeyky, Coordinator of the CIVICS program in Lebanon attended the event. Teachers engaged in two interactive workshops: The underlying objectives of iEARN projects and Forum tutorials. Guest speakers spoke about the state of the environment in Lebanon, the availability of resources and the importance of students work in making a difference.
