Students
to HOWL! for the Environment
What does it
sound like to have 1,000 teenagers give a wild wolf howl in unison
in the Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History?
At 10:00 am on Thursday, April 23rd, these students, and others linked
by video-conferencing around the world, will howl as a wake-up call
to alert the world to the issues of habitat preservation and biodiversity
at the Fifth Annual Youth CaN Conference.
The theme of this
year's event is "H.O.W.L. (Help Our World Live!!)."
These students
are meeting at the annual Youth CaN (Youth Communicating and Networking)
event to share how they are using telecommunications and other technology
in local, national and global environmental projects. Through video-conferencing,
telephone and the Internet, students in New York will be linked with
students in Alabama, Texas, Kazakhstan, Russia, Spain and Australia
in a day of workshops, displays and interactive dramatic presentations
of their concern and actions to address environmental issues.
A highlight of
this year's event will be an interactive student skit presented by
high school students from New York City, Long Island, and Russia,
and will be joined by elementary students from New York's School for
the Deaf. This skit, written by a student at Manhattan's High School
of Fashion Industries, will be presented during the Youth CaN Opening
Ceremony from 10:00 - 10:30.
The keynote presentation
is by Anya Lisenko, a high school student from Russia.
Youth CaN
is a growing and sustained network of young people, schools, environmental
organizations using telecommunications and other technology in local,
national and global environmental projects. During the year, students
undertake environmental projects, share their work and identify partners,
using telecommunications. An annual event, usually near the celebration
of Earth Day, is held worldwide to enable students to share with others
what they have accomplished.
Core principles
of Youth CaN include:
- The annual
event is planned and implemented by students
- Participation
will be international
- The annual
event will be conducted in multiple sites, using telecommunications
technology, to enable as much global networking and sharing among
students as possible
- ·It
is a collaborative event, enabling any organization/school/student
to share in the responsibility and fun of its implementation
