7. iEARN-USA TEAMS WITH NEW YORK UNIVERSITY TO CONTACT PIONEER TEACHERS. NYU graduate students have embarked on an important "Capstone" project to locate, survey and interview teachers who were involved in the first five years (1988-1993) of iEARN's pioneering online international collaboration. Having tracked down teachers in New York State and Moscow (some have retired and most e-mail addresses have changed over 18 years!), the students are now in the process of surveying teachers on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. They are exploring how iEARN work (in the early days it was called the New York State/Moscow Schools Telecommunications Project) impacted their teaching and student learning over the past two decades-building up to a 20 Year Anniversary Celebration of iEARN in 2008. Initial results will be shared at the Cairo iEARN International Conference in July 2007. If you know of teachers and/or students from this very early period, contact anniversary@us.iearn.org.

8. iEARN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TEST ARABIC/ENGLISH TRANSLATION TECHNOLOGY. A new asynchronous translation technology developed as part of the MEADAN initiative will be tested by teachers and students in iEARN over the next 3-4 months. Meadan is a website designed to serve as a global town square for cross language (Arabic/English) dialogues on emerging events. A Meadan 'dialogue' is started by one user simply placing a text based comment on events or event related content aggregated on the Meadan site. This comment is then located on a global map, where another user can chose to respond-thereby creating a dialogue. Users will see all content (including dialogue postings) in their chosen language, either English or Arabic, regardless of the language source. Funding for this new machine translation technology has come from IBM. For more info, see http://www.meadan.org/

9. YOUNG PEOPLE INVITED TO APPLY FOR OXFAM INTERNATIONAL YOUTH PARTNERSHIPS. (Deadline: January 31). Oxfam International Youth Partnerships is a global network of young people working with their communities to create positive, equitable, and sustainable change. Youth who are chosen will have opportunities to develop their skills, knowledge, and understanding, and to talk and share with other like-minded young people. OIYP is open to young people of any nationality or ethnicity and any level of education. 10. CALL TO ACTION - Llamado a la acción - Appel à l'action. Stop discrimination and violence against girls. The Working Group on Girls and UNICEF's Voices of Youth, are asking you to read this youth version of an expert report and tell us what you think should be done. The report talks about which girls are in danger of violence and unfair treatment and suggests ways governments, and their citizens, can protect them. Your recommendations and suggestions will be presented at the 51st annual Commission on the Status of Women at United Nations headquarters in February-March 2007. Read and respond using our online questionnaire , and send your answers back to us by 30 January 2007. Go to: http://www.unicef.org/voy/takeaction/takeaction_3295.html

11. BE PART OF THE "OUR WORLD 2007" SURVEY. The survey is in 9 languages and can be found here. Please promote the survey to as many young people (ages 15-24) as possible in all regions of the world. As you may recall from last year, this survey is intended to take the pulse of how youth in different parts of the world think and feel about issues of cultural, social, and economic identity both on the national and global level. The survey has been translated to various languages so more youth from different parts of the world can participate. An e-mail version of the survey can be received by sending a blank message to any of the following addresses: <ourworld-english@us.iearn.org>, <ourworld-espanol@us.iearn.org>, <ourworld-francais@us.iearn.org>, <ourworld-deutsch@us.iearn.org>, <ourworld-dutch@us.iearn.org>.
