Seeking Partners: iEARN Projects

1. DO YOU WANT YOUR iEARN PROJECT INCLUDED IN THE 2007-2008 iEARN PROJECT BOOK? If you are currently facilitating an iEARN project, or are planning a new iEARN project, and would like to have it included in the 2007-2008 iEARN Project Description Book, please complete the project template below and send it to projectbook@us.iearn.org as soon as possible, but no later than the FINAL DEADLINE of August 25th. If yours is a new project, idea, please note that all new projects must indicate that they have an initial group of participants (#11 below) before being considered for publication. To find partners for your project, please share your project idea in the Teachers Forum, or, for students, the Youth Forum. In addition, you are welcome to share your new project idea in the iEARN News Flash newsletter by sending a brief description to newsflash@us.iearn.org.

2. UPDATE OF ORAL HISTORY - KINDRED WEB SITE. Coordinator Judy Barr would like to invite everyone to visit the Oral History Kindred website which has just been updated to include many of the stories that have recently been submitted. Contributors should check the stories to see if their photos have been included. Please let Judy know if there are any mistakes. Some photos could not be used because they were not in the correct format. If you would like to send a photo please post it on the forum in jpg format or send it by email to Judy.

3. COLLABORATE WITH PARTNERS IN NEPAL AND THE NETHERLANDS. The Netherlands and Nepal are calling on you to join us in a new cross-curricular economics, English and geography project for the year 2007-2008. The idea is to combine 2 classes, ages between 13-15, from 2 different continents, pupils creating their own virtual business, learning about Fair Trade and sustainable development for aim. The project is called BEST Project, which means Building Economies Strong Together. Please mail Marleen Spierings in the Netherlands at sg@vhl.nl.

4. JOIN THE GET TO KNOW OTHERS PROJECT. Project facilitator Gamal Kasem in Egypt is seeking your input on how to make it an even better project. See the discussion topic: "Your great ideas and contributions" in the Get to Know Others Forum. For more about the project, see here.

5. NEW STORIES ON PEARL WORLD YOUTH NEWS WEB SITE. Check out stories filed by PEARL Reporters in Oman, Dominican Republic and Vietnam. They have reported on issues ranging from the cyclone that hit Oman last month to Santo Domingo's new subway and the trend of celebratory funerals in Ho Chi Minh City. For more information about the project, write to Anindita Dutta Roy in the USA.

6. LEST WE FORGET OUR SONGS AND DANCE. Students find out songs and dances that were practised by their ancestors over a century in their respective countries and describe their cultural importance with respect to such occasions as festivals, funerals, national gatherings, wars and weddings e.t.c. 7. MY HERITAGE IN TOURISM. The students will find out at least five natural tourist places in their country and describe the places, their economic importance, and cultural importance and describe how and when it is safe to visit these places. Interested? Contact Paul Mpofu in Zimbabwe.

8. JOIN A VIDEO EXCHANGE PROJECT. My name is Rushton Hurley, and I am part of a group of teachers at two schools in Santa Clara, California, USA. From July 1 until December 31 of 2007, we will collect short video pieces from students around the world. Our goal is to introduce communities through short videos in which students show and tell what their neighborhoods are like, what they study in school, what they do on the weekends, and what they hope for the future. We hope that you will participate in our project, and that you will enjoy seeing how others around the world introduce their communities. Contact Rushton Hurley in the USA.

9. BUILD CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING BY SHARING EVERYDAY EXPERIENCES AROUND THE GLOBE. Interested in being part of a global exchange using a questionnaire designed to compare aspects of everyday life that kids are interested in knowing about other kids? 10. ERADICATION OF MALARIA PROJECT TARGETS DEADLY DISEASE. According to a the BBC, "About two million people die of malaria each year in Africa, 90% of whom are children under five.” In the Eradication of Malaria Project, students research the disease in their country, share new information on prevention and treatment, and then work together with students in unaffected countries to provide mosquito nets for homes in Botswana and other African countries. 11. CONTRIBUTE TO THE GLOBAL NOMADS BOOK, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MISCONCEPTIONS. It's a collection of misconceptions that people around the world have about each other. We would like your help in asking friends, family and co-workers what some of their misconceptions are about people in the world. It can be perception or reality. It can be from anyone - young or old. It can be about any country or experience they have encountered in their life (just reading an article or actually traveling abroad). Just anything to demonstrate that misconceptions do exist. Click on this link to take the survey and add your misconception!

12. BE PART OF A GLOBAL PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT FOR INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY. A project for young people aged 11 to 24 around the world called Shoot Nations for International Youth Day. Young people are invited to submit photographs to be exhibited at the United Nations Headquarters in NYC for International Youth Day on 12 August, as well as win prizes and be exhibited in galleries in 5 countries around the world. The competition is FREE to enter and is packed with educational and artistic value. http://www.shootnations.org

13. SECOND NATIONAL iEARN-UKRAINE CONFERENCE, JULY 14-15. Teachers from 40 schools all around our country will share their outcomes and ideas for future. 14. iEARN-EGYPT TO HOST 14TH ANNUAL iEARN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND 11TH YOUTH SUMMIT, JULY 21 - 26, 2007 IN CAIRO. The theme of the conference is: Connecting Cultures and Respecting Differences: A Global Dialogue for Development and Sustainability. This theme will serve as an umbrella for iEARN projects and other sub-themes such as: professional development, new educational developments, new developments in ICT, iEARN initiatives and management, global dialogue and rural development. The conference is expected to attract 1000 participants. Parallel to the educators' conference, there will be an international youth summit with a focus on Leadership and Youth Empowerment. Recent Events

Correction -- MEARN (iEARN-Morocco) ORGANIZED SECOND NATIONAL CONFERENCE, MAY 25-27, 2007. The event gathered more than 100 participants from all regions of the country. The forum was organized in partnership with the regional academy for education and training of Meknes Tafilalt, with the theme, "ICTs integration of the field of training and learning."
