iEARN in Action! October 30, 2000

WEEKLY BULGARIAN PAPER FEATURES I*EARN CONFERENCE IN BEIJING. In October the weekly newspaper for teachers in Bulgaria (The Az Buki Newspaper, 11-17 October 2000) published an article about the I*EARN conference in Beijing entitled "The Seventh I*EARN Conference Was in Beijing". The article was written by Vela Spassova, a participant in the Youth Summit and the Seventh Annual Conference in Beijing.

I*EARN IS A PARTNER IN THE PLANET PROJECT STUDENT UNDERGROUND. It is part of an overall project aimed at being the largest collaborative online event in history. It offers students and classrooms a chance to learn about other countries, other cultures and other people while participating in an unprecedented global poll of the human race. From November 15 - 18, 2000, millions of people from around the world will be able to share and then instantly compare their thought, beliefs, opinions, fears, similarities and differences at the beginning of the new millennium. http://students.planetproject.com

4TH TELEMATIC TELAR/I*EARN CAMP IN ARGENTINA From November 2-4, more than 400 students and treachers from various provinces in Argentina, will be meeting in Carlos Paz, Province of Cordoba. FIRST-EVER INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK IN THE US IS NOV. 13-17. "U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley has set the week of Nov. 13 as a special time for students to recognize the value of gaining a broad understanding of the cultures, languages and governments of other nations. As part of this effort, iEARN has been asked to compile a "Teachers' Guide to International Collaboration On the Internet." The Guide will be available on their website at during International Education Week.http://www.ed.gov/technology.

WORKSHOP HELD TO INTRODUCE I*EARN TO SCHOOLS IN SRI LANKA. The workshop was held at The Royal College Auditorium on October 20th with 10 new schools. Congratulations to Lakshmi Attygalle and the participants for a successful workshop!

SMILE TRAIN CLEFT BUDDY PROJECT. The Smile Train Cleft Buddy Project is seeking classes or clubs to participate in a pen-pal exchange program. All ages from all countries are welcome. The purpose of the project is to teach students tolerance and understanding for people who may look different, focusing mainly on facial deformities such as cleft lip. HELP A RESEARCH TEAM EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF ONLINE TOOLS AND RESOURCES. If you are a classroom teacher whose students use any kind of online resources or tools, and if you would be willing to contribute about 45 minutes of your time, thoughts, and experience by completing a Web-based questionnaire about what you learn as your students participate in online projects, please contact Judi Harris jbharris@emissary.ots.utexas.edu from the University of Texas, Austin in the USA.

CLASS LESSON RESOURCES. Nina Koptyug, Russia, is the winner of the National Best Lesson Contest "100 Friends." Her "Local History" lesson was written while working on The Local History project coordinated by Margaret Shearn, Australia. HELP TRANSLATE "Let's All Work Together." Native students (various tribes), in the US are making a webpage that will have the unity message "Let's all work together!" (or similar one "We have to live together in peace!") translated into many languages. They now have 336 of the world's 6700 languages and need help finding more. CIVICS MEETING IN CAIRO, EGYPT. New I*EARN educators from Egypt, India, Lebanon, Jordan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Senegal, Kenya, Bulgaria, Ghana and Iran will be meeting November 10-13, 2000. Most of the participants will be Middle and Secondary School English teachers, participating in the CIVICS (Community Voices, Collaborative Solutions) project sponsored by iEARN-US and the U.S. Department of State.
