Tres Bosques, Un Mundo (Three Forests, One World) Tree Planting in NYC

iEARN-USA and the Riverside Park Fund teamed up to offer students a training in managing urban forests as part of the Tres Bosques, Un Mundo Program, which connects high schools in New York City, NY and Oroville, WA with schools in Jarabacoa and Villa Riva in the Dominican Republic.

During the three days of training during the week of November 29, students from the High School for Law and Public Service along with students affiliated with YouthCaN learned about the history of Riverside Park, how large public park spaces are managed to meet the diverse needs of the city's citizens, the reasons for planting the different types of trees in the park, what goes into managing the controlled environment. Students also got the opportunity to conduct a site survey of an area of the park and plan out a planting, which they then carried out with the help of a group of 7 students from Oroville. The participants in the Tres Bosques, Un Mundo program came together to plant over 1,000 perennials in Riverside Park on December 4, 2010.  See more photos on Flickr.
